Omis wildfire causes fatalities and mass evacuations in Croatia FAST-MOVING
A devastating wildfire in the Omis region of Croatia has caused significant destruction and loss of life. The blaze, which began near Lokva Rogoznica, spread rapidly due to strong winds and extreme heat, consuming approximately 1,000 hectares of land.
Authorities have confirmed at least one fatality, with police discovering a body during an inspection of the burned area. The fire caused extensive damage to residential buildings, vehicles, boats, and restaurants. At least 36 people required medical attention, with 14 hospitalizations reported; seven individuals remain in critical condition with severe burns.
Mass evacuations were ordered, with approximately 1,000 to 2,000 people, including many tourists, moved to reception centers such as the Ribnjak City Sports Hall in Omis. Some residents were evacuated by sea to escape the advancing flames. The Adriatic Highway (DC8) was closed to traffic between Stanići and Medić to facilitate emergency operations.
Firefighting efforts involved hundreds of personnel, including over 200 firefighters and specialized Canadair water-bombing aircraft. Croatian officials, including Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic and President Zoran Milanovic, visited the site to assess the damage and coordinate relief efforts.
