OMIE introduces new electricity price spread indicator for Iberian market

The Iberian Electricity Market Operator (OMIE) has introduced a new indicator to analyze daily electricity price spreads. Available since mid-August, this tool allows market participants and the public to monitor the difference between the most expensive and cheapest four-hour periods within a single trading day.

The indicator calculates the arithmetic mean difference between high-price and low-price periods, expressed in euros/MWh. It offers data for 1, 2, and 4-hour windows to facilitate intraday price signal analysis. The information is provided separately for the Spanish and Portuguese markets.

In Spain, wholesale electricity prices for September 7, 2026, averaged 172.07 €/MWh. The lowest prices were recorded between 14:00 and 15:00 at 0.08544 €/kWh, while the highest prices occurred between 21:00 and 22:00 at 0.38043 €/kWh. Factors influencing these fluctuations include international gas prices and CO2 emission rights.
