Omoa community opposes industrial port construction project

In Omoa, Cortés, the organization ‘Salvemos Omoa’ is opposing an attempt to change land-use regulations to allow for the construction of an industrial port. The proposed ‘Terminal Marítima’ project, approved by the National Congress in 2021, involves a $120 million investment through a 25-year concession to Invesport S.A. and Servicios Consolidados, coordinated by the Empresa Nacional Portuaria.

Opponents, including residents, council members, and environmentalists, argue the terminal would be located in the Motriques sector near the Omoa River mouth, an area home to manatees, dolphins, and turtles. They claim the project threatens the local ecosystem, tourism, fishing, and residential developments. While Mayor Ricardo Alvarado has expressed support for investment and job creation, critics note that no environmental impact study has been presented.

In a separate matter in Maimón, Dominican community groups have also expressed rejection of a proposed multipurpose port, citing conflicts with local tourism development plans.
