Omoa maritime terminal development opposition

In Omoa, Cortés, local residents, entrepreneurs, and environmentalists are protesting a proposed $120 million maritime terminal project. The development, involving a 25-year concession to Invesport S.A. and Servicios Consolidados, is coordinated by the Empresa Nacional Portuaria.

Opponents argue the terminal would be situated in the Motriques sector near the mouth of the Omoa River, an area currently utilized for residential and tourism purposes. Critics warn the project could devastate local ecosystems—specifically habitats for manatees, dolphins, and turtles—and damage the local economy. Some residents have reported receiving death threats due to their opposition.

While proponents, including Omoa Mayor Ricardo Alvarado, argue the project is essential for job creation and increased port capacity, the organization ‘Salvemos Omoa’ is actively opposing attempts to change land-use regulations to facilitate the construction. Critics have noted that no environmental impact study has been presented for the project.
