Ondo State Assembly Speaker Olamide Oladiji Faces Impeachment Over Plenary Session Halt

Since January 2026 the Ondo State House of Assembly has held only four to five plenary sessions, far fewer than the constitutionally mandated three times a week. Lawmakers allege Speaker Olamide Oladiji blocked regular plenary sittings and diverted ₦44 million intended for the budget of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission.

Twenty‑one of the 26 legislators signed a notice demanding the speaker resign or face impeachment, giving him a deadline of Sunday to step down. Chair of the House Committee on Information, Olatunji Fabiyi, acknowledged that parliamentary meetings continue but affirmed that plenary sessions have not been held. Oladiji denies the accusations, calling them baseless and insisting the assembly meets regularly.

The crisis reflects a deepening leadership dispute within the state legislature and could lead to an impeachment vote on the assembly floor if the speaker does not resign.
