Ondo Assembly speaker impeachment
Entities: Olamide Oladiji · Ondo State House of Assembly · Lucky Aiyedatiwa · Olatunji Fabiyi · Ondo State Oil‑Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC)
Overview
In late July 2026 the Ogun House of Assembly cleared former Speaker Olakunle Oluomo of embezzlement claims, converting his impeachment into a resignation. Around the same time, the Ondo State Assembly entered a separate leadership crisis. Twenty‑one of the 26 Ondo legislators signed an impeachment notice against Speaker Olamide Oladiji, alleging he diverted roughly ₦44 million from the budget of the Ondo State Oil‑Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) and blocked regular plenary sittings, which had fallen to only four or five meetings since January 2026, well below the constitutional requirement of three times a week. The speaker appealed to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and other allies, insisting he remained in office.
On 29 July, Chair of the House Committee on Information Olatunji Fabiyi confirmed that while the assembly continued to meet, plenary sessions had not been held, underscoring the depth of the dispute and the risk of an imminent floor vote.
By 1 August, support for removal had risen to 24 of 26 legislators after a two‑week reconciliation period requested by the governor ended. Lawmakers reiterated accusations of financial misconduct and procedural abuse, while Oladiji denied wrongdoing, claiming the drive was politically motivated ahead of the 2027 elections. The Assembly spokesman reiterated that the charges concern accountability and breach of procedure, and the impeachment vote appears imminent.
