Ondo Assembly speaker impeachment crisis

Overview

In late July 2026, the Ogun House of Assembly cleared former Speaker Olakunle Oluomo of embezzlement claims, converting his impeachment into a resignation. Simultaneously, the Ondo State Assembly entered a leadership crisis. Twenty-one of 26 legislators signed an impeachment notice against Speaker Olamide Oladiji, alleging he diverted approximately ₦44 million from the Ondo State Oil-Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) budget and blocked regular plenary sittings, which had fallen to only four or five meetings since January 2026.

OSOPADEC issued a statement denying involvement in the dispute, noting the alleged misappropriation is a legislative matter and warning against the misuse of its name. By 1 August, support for Oladiji’s removal grew to 24 of 26 legislators following a failed two-week reconciliation period requested by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. Oladiji denied the charges, claiming they were politically motivated ahead of the 2027 elections.

By late August, the impeachment process remained active. Assembly spokesperson Olatunji Fabiyi dismissed reports that the removal process had been abandoned, stating, “There is no going back.” The crisis escalated when suspected political thugs, reportedly from the Speaker’s constituency in Ondo town, invaded the Assembly complex. The intrusion caused disruption and forced the Speaker to leave the premises hurriedly before security agencies and lawmakers removed the intruders.
