Ondo State investigates suspected poisoning deaths in Odigbo

Authorities in Ondo State, Nigeria, are investigating a suspected mass poisoning incident in the Odigbo Local Government Area. Reports indicate that at least 30 residents have died following the consumption of herbal liquids or locally produced alcoholic drinks. The fatalities are concentrated in the communities of Odigbo town and Araromi Obu.

At least 50 other individuals are currently receiving medical treatment in various hospitals. Symptoms reported by medical professionals include acute abdominal pain, severe vomiting, and respiratory distress. The Ondo State Police Command and health officials are conducting toxicological examinations and autopsies to determine the exact cause of death and identify the specific substance involved.

In response to the tragedy, the Odigbo Local Government Chairman, Taiwo Adegoroye, has placed a precautionary ban on the sale and consumption of locally brewed alcoholic drinks in the affected area. The Ondo State Government has also issued a warning to the public against consuming uncertified or unregulated herbal concoctions and has urged citizens to obtain medicines only from authorized outlets.
