Ondo State, Nigeria: 49 dead from suspected methanol-laced herbal drink
At least 49 people have died and approximately 170 others have been affected by a suspected methanol poisoning in Ondo State, Nigeria. The health crisis is centered in the Odigbo and Irele local government areas, where victims consumed a locally brewed herbal drink known as 'Monkey Tail'.
Health Commissioner Dr. Banji Ajaka reported that the consumption of the contaminated substance led to rapid medical emergencies, including kidney failure, vision loss, and brain damage. Medical teams and government agencies, including the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), have been deployed to contain the outbreak.
Authorities have arrested 15 individuals in connection with the incident, including one suspect, Oloruntoba Babatunde, who is allegedly involved in the production of the toxic substance. In response to the crisis, the Ondo State government has banned the sale of unverified alcoholic drinks, and NAFDAC is enforcing a nationwide ban on alcohol sold in small plastic sachets and containers to prevent further access by vulnerable populations.
