Rotterdam flat fire kills man as multiple Dutch blazes spark arson probes
On Thursday night a fire erupted in a flat on Watertorenweg in Rotterdam’s De Esch district, killing a man in his 60s after emergency services were unable to revive him. Police and forensic investigators are examining two loud bangs heard before the blaze and have not ruled out any scenario.
In the early hours of Saturday, two parked cars were completely engulfed by fire on the Maas in Kaatsheuvel. Police suspect arson and are reviewing CCTV footage from the area.
A large dune fire broke out in Ouddorp on 6 August and was escalated to GRIP 2. About 150 responders were deployed; a firefighter was seriously injured and air‑lifted to hospital.
The week also saw major blazes across the Netherlands, including a fire at a recycling centre in Winterswijk, a parking‑lot blaze in Uithoorn, and the Ouddorp dune fire, prompting multi‑regional command structures and the involvement of German fire units.
