One Nation seeks forensic audit of $2 million fundraiser amid Albanese doubts

Australian populist party One Nation, led by Senator Pauline Hanson, announced it will commission a forensic audit to verify the legitimacy of its “fire the liar” fundraising campaign, which it says raised more than $2 million. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese questioned the amount, suggesting the online donation counter could be fraudulent, and told reporters, “What evidence is there? It is an example of slogans being put forward, not substance.” Hanson responded at a Western Australia media event, saying, “Why would I call out the liar … then go and do something like that myself? It would destroy me.”

The party says independent analysts will confirm the campaign’s authenticity. Within the opposition, Liberal MP Tony Pasin urged discussions on preferential seating to avoid splitting the conservative vote, while Opposition Leader Angus Taylor rejected any formal alliance, stating there will be “no carve‑up of seats.” Other Liberal frontbenchers warned of reputational risk. Polls indicate a combined One Nation, Liberal and National primary vote of almost 50%, with One Nation now the party with the largest primary vote and the Liberal‑National coalition’s share down to about 18%. Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott has expressed support for preferencing One Nation.
