ONEC warns tax evasion creates unfair competition

The National Organization of Commercial Enterprises (ONEC) has warned that tax evasion and failure to meet labor and regulatory obligations create market distortions. Jennifer Troncoso, executive director of ONEC, stated that legal compliance should not become a competitive disadvantage for businesses compared to establishments that reduce costs through illegal practices.

This position follows reports from the General Directorate of Customs (DGA) regarding strengthened enforcement processes. The DGA announced that during the first half of 2026, it recovered RD$1,652 million in undeclared taxes from 389 Asian importers. Additionally, the DGA has expanded post-clearance verifications at commercial establishments in Santo Domingo and Santiago.

ONEC emphasized that these enforcement actions are vital to ensure all companies compete under the same rules. Troncoso noted that non-compliance not only harms law-abiding businesses but also reduces state revenue. She called for appropriate sanctions and judicial processes when inspections uncover illegal activities.
