Overview

In the Dominican Republic, authorities have intensified efforts to combat tax evasion and ensure fair market competition. The National Organization of Commercial Enterprises (ONEC) warned that illegal cost-cutting through non-compliance creates market distortions, arguing that legal compliance should not become a “competitive disadvantage” for businesses.

Initial reports from the General Directorate of Customs (DGA) indicated that during the first half of 2026, RD$1,652 million in undeclared taxes were recovered from 389 Asian importers. This was accompanied by expanded post-clearance verifications in Santo Domingo and Santiago.

Following these developments, the Dirección General de Impuestos Internos (DGII) identified more than 1.5 billion pesos in tax adjustments after auditing approximately 80 Chinese-owned businesses. DGII Director Pedro Urrutia stated that these investigations focus on accounting inconsistencies, property ownership, and operational methods, such as large-scale facilities that are not reflected in accounting records.
