Onimusha: Way of the Sword revives classic foes in its first mainline debut in over 20 years

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the first mainline entry in the series in more than two decades. Directed by Satoru Nihei, the game launches on September 4 for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, after being moved up from a September 25 date to avoid competition.

Nihei explained to Game Informer that while the story, world and characters are new, the enemy design pays homage to earlier titles. “There’s no direct kind of connection to the old games in the game world, but we have tried to pay homage to some of the elements from those older games,” he said. New monsters such as the Chijiko (reminiscent of Reynaldo Genma from the original Onimusha), a Bazuu‑inspired spinning foe and a Gyaran‑like projectile shooter were created by remixing classic designs.
