Onions and Avocados Storage Guidelines for Home Kitchens

Storing onions in the refrigerator vegetable bin or on the countertop promotes early mold growth and rapid sprouting. Experts advise keeping whole onions in a completely dark, well‑ventilated space at a moderate temperature of 8‑12 °C—such as a cellar or low pantry—to extend freshness up to six months. Plastic bags should be avoided; breathable containers like netted sacks or woven baskets work best, and onions should be stored away from potatoes to prevent ethylene‑induced spoilage.

Avocados also deteriorate quickly when left on the kitchen counter. For unripe fruits, a cool, dry, dark location (cellar, pantry) slows maturation, while ripe avocados can be refrigerated to delay further aging. They should be kept separate from ethylene‑producing fruits such as apples, bananas or pears. Cut avocados benefit from retaining the pit, a light brush of lemon juice, and storage in an airtight container, with refrigeration extending edible quality for one to two days.
