Online betting addiction causes financial crisis in Brazil

Online betting platforms are causing significant financial and psychological distress in Brazil, highlighted by a lawsuit against Superbet and rising debt levels in Santa Catarina.

A bettor from Campo Grande is suing Superbet after her account was reportedly reactivated without explanation, despite her diagnosis of ludopathy (gambling addiction). Following the reactivation, she lost approximately R$ 561,919 in four months through PIX transfers. Her legal representation argues that the company was aware of her vulnerability after previously suspending the account but failed to maintain protections.

In Santa Catarina, the impact of online betting has become a public health and financial crisis. Data from Procon/SC indicates that virtual betting is now the second leading cause of over-indebtedness among consumers seeking assistance through the state's Support Center for the Over-indebted (NAS). The program has already handled 353 cases, resulting in the renegotiation of R$ 25.4 million in debt. Additionally, health networks in the Florianópolis metropolitan area report an increased demand for psychosocial and psychiatric support due to the rise in compulsive gambling.
