Online gaming industry faces rising identity fraud and security risks
The online gaming and gambling industry faces escalating security threats, including sophisticated identity fraud and account takeovers. Recent incidents highlight the severity of these risks, such as a case where two individuals were charged with defrauding FanDuel and other gambling sites of $3 million using approximately 3,000 stolen identities.
Fraudsters are increasingly utilizing AI to automate attacks, allowing small groups to steal hundreds of identities rapidly. Common vulnerabilities include the use of stolen credentials from data breaches to access user accounts and transfer funds. Traditional security measures, such as manual reviews and basic Know Your Customer (KYC) processes, are becoming insufficient against these evolving tactics.
Beyond financial fraud, players face various risks including malware, phishing, data theft, addiction, cyberbullying, privacy leaks, and financial loss from microtransactions. Experts suggest that moving toward proactive security—such as face-based biometrics and advanced liveness detection—and practicing better digital hygiene, like using strong passwords and choosing reputable platforms, can help mitigate these dangers.
