ONS activates emergency plan to reduce energy generation in Brazil
The National Electric System Operator (ONS) has activated an emergency plan for the second time in 2026 to reduce energy generation due to excess supply in the National Interconnected System (SIN). The measure, scheduled for Sunday (23) from 11:00 to 13:30, aims to maintain system security during a period of expected low consumption. The action affects only distributors and is not expected to impact end consumers.
The plan involves restricting generation from Type 3 power plants, which include small hydroelectric plants (PCHs), biomass, and small-scale wind and solar projects connected to distribution networks. This follows a previous activation on June 7, during the Corpus Christi holiday, which required managing 1,000 megawatts (MW).
To address the rapid growth of distributed renewable energy, particularly solar, the ONS is developing the Regional Generation Relief Scheme (Erag). This system is designed to automatically disconnect parts of distributed generation during critical situations, with the capacity to implement cuts of up to 3 gigawatts (GW) in three 1 GW stages.
