Brazil energy sector faces grid stability measures and rising thermal costs
Brazil's National Electric System Operator (ONS) has implemented emergency cuts to distributed energy generation to prevent grid overload. This measure targets type 3 micro and mini-generation, including small hydroelectric, biomass, wind, and solar plants, particularly during weekends when demand is lower. This marks the second time such a mechanism has been used this year to balance the system.
In a separate economic development, thermal power generation costs in the National Interconnected System (SIN) more than doubled in July, reaching R$ 1.58 billion. This spike was primarily driven by dispatch costs due to inflexibility, with the GNA II plant accounting for 55% of these specific costs.
On the technological and agricultural front, initiatives in Paraná are promoting biodigestion to manage animal waste. Projects led by Coopenad and Sistema FAEP demonstrate how converting waste into biogas and organic fertilizers can reduce production costs and environmental liabilities for swine farmers.
Additionally, the energy sector is addressing security and regulatory changes. Authorities are warning against ‘solar fraud’ (gato solar), where equipment is manipulated to bypass billing. Meanwhile, new regulations are expected to allow residential consumers and small businesses to choose their energy suppliers by 2028, mirroring the portability model used in the telecommunications market.
