Ontario education workers escalate labor tensions amid stalled negotiations

Education workers in Ontario are escalating tensions with the provincial government over funding and contract negotiations. The Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association has scheduled a strike vote for November 12 and 13, stating the move is intended to demand meaningful progress at the bargaining table as contract talks remain in the initial stages.

Negotiations are currently complicated by a dispute regarding bargaining jurisdiction. The Ontario Labour Relations Board is reviewing whether specific topics should be negotiated centrally with the province or locally with school boards. Unions have accused Education Minister Paul Calandra of attempting to move local working condition issues into the central bargaining sphere.

In a related demonstration of labor unrest, CUPE 1328, representing workers in the Toronto Catholic District School Board, held a community outreach event to highlight challenges such as chronic understaffing and underfunding. The union and its allies, including the Ontario Federation of Labour, are campaigning against what they describe as insufficient provincial support that impacts student services and increases workloads for staff.
