Ontario Northwest Wildfires Escalate with Multiple Uncontrolled Blazes

On May 15, the Ontario Wildland Fire Information System reported 17 active wildland fires in the province's Northwest Region, with most still not under control. Notable fires include Fort Frances 4 (10 ha) and Fort Frances 5 (20 ha), both subject to aerial and ground suppression, and a 168‑ha fire near Dryden that prompted the Ontario Provincial Police to evacuate nearby residents and close Highway 599. Additional smaller fires were recorded across the Kenora, Thunder Bay and Dryden areas, leading to several highway closures.

The previous day's update (May 14) noted no active fires in the Northeast Region and confirmed a minor 0.5‑ha fire near Cochrane that had been extinguished. Authorities reminded the public of Ontario's outdoor fire rules for the ongoing fire season, urging caution with grass and debris burning to prevent further incidents.
