Ontario Premier defends Lake Ontario name after Trump order
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has responded to a U.S. executive order by installing a large billboard on the Canadian shore of Lake Ontario. The sign, which reads ‘Lake Ontario. Now and Forever’ in both English and French, serves as a symbolic rejection of President Donald Trump’s attempt to rename the body of water ‘Lake America’.
The dispute follows the collapse of trade negotiations, leading the United States to impose 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian products. In response, Canada is expected to implement dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs next month.
President Trump has promoted the name change through various AI-generated videos on social media. Premier Ford stated that the renaming is a reaction to Canada defending its interests, asserting that the lake will retain its historical name long after the current U.S. administration leaves office.
