Open Cosmos to launch 192-satellite ConnectedCosmos constellation

Open Cosmos has announced plans to build its ConnectedCosmos low Earth orbit (LEO) telecommunications constellation using a foundation of 192 satellites. The company aims to have more than 96 satellites in orbit by the end of 2028, with the goal of achieving full global coverage by 2030.

The network is designed to provide a secure European alternative for government, institutional, and commercial clients who require reliable connectivity and control over sensitive data. The system utilizes Optical Inter-Satellite-Links (ISL) to route data directly in space, bypassing terrestrial ground stations and subsea cables. This architecture allows for high-capacity data transmission, such as raw satellite imagery and large database backups, even in environments where GNSS is contested.

Open Cosmos intends to integrate broadband satellite communications, IoT, and Earth Observation into a single transport layer. The company is currently establishing manufacturing capabilities in Europe to produce one satellite per day and is in discussions with multiple launch providers for upcoming missions.
