Open Cosmos ConnectedCosmos satellite constellation
Overview
Open Cosmos has announced plans to develop the ConnectedCosmos constellation, a low Earth orbit (LEO) telecommunications network consisting of 192 satellites. The project aims to deploy more than 96 satellites by the end of 2028, with the ultimate goal of achieving full global coverage by 2030.
The network is intended to serve as a secure European alternative for commercial, institutional, and government clients. By utilizing Optical Inter-Satellite-Links (ISL), the system will route data directly through space, bypassing subsea cables and terrestrial ground stations. This architecture is designed to support high-capacity data transmission, including large database backups and raw satellite imagery, particularly in environments where GNSS is contested.
Open Cosmos plans to integrate Earth Observation, IoT, and broadband satellite communications into a single transport layer. To support this, the company is establishing European manufacturing capabilities to reach a production rate of one satellite per day and is currently negotiating with various launch providers.
