Open Fiber expands FTTH network in Vizzini to enable telemedicine

Open Fiber has expanded its FTTH (Fiber to the Home) network in Vizzini, a historic town in the province of Catania, to enable telemedicine services. The infrastructure covers over 8 kilometers and reaches more than 800 properties, including homes, businesses, professional offices, and healthcare facilities such as the local Consultorio and Poliambulatorio in Borgo Cunziria.

This project was implemented through the ‘Italia a 1 Giga’ and ‘Banda ultra larga’ plans, which utilize public co-financing to bring high-speed connectivity to internal areas not previously served by ultra-broadband networks. The high-speed connection is essential for telemedicine, allowing for real-time data transmission, patient monitoring, and digital consultations between patients, general practitioners, and specialists.

Field manager Vito Fraschilla noted that the fiber network provides new opportunities for residents, businesses, and tourism while improving local healthcare accessibility. However, he highlighted that increasing the adoption rate of fiber remains a challenge in Italy.
