Italian broadband infrastructure expansion

Overview

Italy is implementing various infrastructure projects to expand high-speed connectivity and bridge the digital divide in underserved or remote regions.

In Vizzini, Open Fiber has expanded its Fiber to the Home (FTTH) network, covering over 8 kilometers and reaching more than 800 properties. This expansion, supported by the ‘Italia a 1 Giga’ and ‘Banda ultra larga’ plans, is intended to facilitate telemedicine services by enabling real-time data transmission and digital consultations.

In the Lombardy region, a technological experiment is underway to provide digital services to mountainous and remote areas. This initiative integrates satellite, fiber optic, and wireless technologies to reach locations where traditional terrestrial networks are difficult to install. Additionally, FiberCop has commenced FTTH installations in Mandello del Lario to replace existing fiber-to-the-cabinet connections with direct fiber-to-building links.
