Netherlands celebrates 40th Open Monumentendag weekend

The 40th edition of the VriendenLoterij Open Monumentendag is taking place across the Netherlands, with the national opening held in Flevoland at Museum Batavialand in Lelystad. The event was officially inaugurated by ambassador Janny van der Heijden, Minister Rianne Letschert, and Jan Klopman.

This year’s theme, ‘Resilient Heritage in Times of Uncertainty,’ is reflected in various locations. Approximately 6,000 monuments are opening their doors to the public for free, offering tours, exhibitions, and activities. Notable participation includes Den Haag, where 89 monuments are accessible, and Kampen, which is highlighting its 200-year history as a cigar city.

Regional activities span the country, from the historical buildings and windmills in Kaag and Braassem to the heritage sites in Gouda, Renkum, and Wassenaar. In Haren, the Burgemeester Boeremapark is being highlighted as a unique green monument. The weekend provides opportunities for visitors to explore sites that are typically closed to the general public.
