OpenAI and WAN-IFRA launch AI initiative for Ukrainian news publishers
OpenAI, WAN-IFRA, and the Association of Independent Regional Press Publishers of Ukraine have launched an artificial intelligence initiative to support independent Ukrainian news outlets. The program is designed to help local and regional publishers navigate the economic and infrastructural challenges caused by the ongoing conflict.
The initiative is structured into two main tracks: Newsroom AI, which focuses on editorial projects, and Business Transformation, which addresses commercial and operational workflows. The educational phase began with the Newsroom AI Masterclass Series on August 5, 2026, featuring international experts sharing strategies on audience engagement, revenue generation, and responsible AI adoption.
Following the masterclasses, the Newsroom AI Catalyst is set to launch on September 17, 2026. This component will provide intensive, individualized support to 10 selected Ukrainian news organizations, helping them identify high-impact use cases and implement AI solutions. To facilitate this, participating organizations will also receive OpenAI API credits to assist with the technical costs of developing newsroom-specific tools.
