OpenAI launches $230 Codex Micro AI keypad
OpenAI introduced its first branded hardware, the Codex Micro, a compact $230 macropad designed with Montreal keyboard studio Work Louder. The device features 13 mechanical switches, a rotary dial that adjusts AI reasoning level, a 2‑D analog joystick, a capacitive touch sensor and RGB‑lit "Agent Keys" that display the status of OpenAI Codex agents. It pairs with the ChatGPT desktop app and ships in a limited run beginning July 24 2026.
The launch arrives amid a federal trade‑secret lawsuit filed by Apple that names OpenAI, io Products and former Apple engineers as defendants. At the same time, OpenAI is developing a separate portable smart‑speaker device with former Apple chief Jony Ive, highlighting the company’s expanding hardware ambitions.
