OpenAI proposes government stake, Tesla caps employee AI spend
OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has offered the U.S. government a stake of more than 5% in OpenAI, a share valued at roughly $42.6 billion, as part of a plan presented to the Trump administration. The proposal, reported by the Financial Times, aims to let the public share in AI‑generated wealth while easing regulatory pressure on the industry. Altman suggested that a sovereign‑wealth‑style fund could hold the equity and distribute returns to citizens, linking the move to broader discussions about a public‑wealth fund for AI firms.
Tesla announced a new internal policy limiting how much staff can spend on AI services to $200 per week (about 300,000 won). Engineers must obtain separate approval to exceed the cap, though usage of the company's own xAI models is exempt. The measure follows rising costs of AI model use and concerns about data security, reflecting a shift from earlier encouragement of unrestricted AI experimentation within the firm.
