AI leaders face antitrust lawsuits over alleged development slowdown

Major AI developers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and SpaceXAI, are facing legal challenges regarding industry cooperation and market competition. A lawsuit filed in California alleges these companies entered into an illegal antitrust agreement to slow the pace of AI development under the guise of safety measures. The plaintiffs, who are paid subscribers to services like ChatGPT and Claude, argue that this coordination reduces consumer value by stifling the competitive progress that would otherwise occur.

In a separate legal battle, OpenAI is seeking summary judgment in an antitrust case brought by Elon Musk’s xAI. The lawsuit alleges that Apple’s integration of ChatGPT into its devices unlawfully restricted rival services. OpenAI has countered by stating the Apple partnership was non-exclusive and has been ‘dramatically underperforming’ in terms of user engagement. OpenAI noted that the integration saw minimal usage and that Apple eventually turned to Google’s Gemini models for Siri.

Simultaneously, Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic are reportedly working to establish a formal joint entity, tentatively named the Standards Authority for Frontier AI, to set safety standards for advanced AI systems. While the companies frame this as necessary coordination for safety, some competitors have criticized the move as a potential cartel.
