OpenAI faces lawsuits from eight US states over child safety

OpenAI is facing significant legal challenges in the United States. Eight states—Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, West Virginia, and Iowa—have filed separate lawsuits alleging that ChatGPT violates consumer protection laws. The prosecutors claim the chatbot misleads users about safety, encourages dangerous behaviors such as self-harm or suicide, and provides unsafe medical advice. Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird stated that the company is hurting children and lying to citizens.

In addition to the state-led actions, a class-action lawsuit has been filed by a mother in Hawaii, alleging that OpenAI collected sensitive personal information from children without valid parental consent. The states are seeking financial penalties and court-ordered changes to how ChatGPT operates, including stricter age controls and enhanced safety safeguards.

OpenAI has defended its practices, stating that it has implemented age-specific protections and continues to develop safeguards to mitigate risks for younger users.
