Opheusden protesters gather against asylum seeker arrival

Approximately 150 people, primarily youths and individuals in their twenties, gathered at the town hall in Opheusden to demonstrate against the arrival of asylum seekers. To manage the event, the municipality established a designated area for protesters and implemented security measures, including extra lighting, surveillance cameras, and a scheduled end time of 22:00.

Local residents wearing blue vests also patrolled the area to encourage peaceful conduct. This demonstration follows a violent incident on September 17, where protests regarding the planned housing of 132 asylum seekers escalated into property damage and attacks on police using heavy fireworks. Following those previous riots, authorities imposed financial penalties on individuals involved in unrest, with fines ranging from 5,000 to 15,000 euros.
