Opioid Overdose Risk Factors and Legal Challenges Highlight Systemic Gaps

A study published in the International Journal of Drug Policy applied a social‑ecological framework to the Massachusetts Public Health Data Warehouse, identifying 224 potential factors linked to fatal opioid‑involved overdoses. Of these, 53 matched existing data measures, and a salience index highlighted ten key risks such as housing instability, fentanyl and polysubstance use, and using drugs alone.

A separate analysis in the Journal of Race, Gender, and Ethnicity critiques how pharmaceutical companies, legislators, and legal institutions have "gamified" the opioid crisis. It traces historical drug‑policy shifts, examines the limits of drug courts and decriminalisation efforts, and argues that comprehensive reform—combining treatment, corporate accountability, and coordinated public‑health policy—is needed to address the epidemic effectively.
