United States opioid crisis research and response

Research into the opioid crisis in the United States has focused on identifying risk factors, systemic failures, and disparities in emergency responses.

Initial studies utilized social-ecological frameworks to identify key risks for fatal overdoses, including housing instability, fentanyl use, and polysubstance use. Further analysis critiqued how pharmaceutical companies and legal institutions have “gamified” the crisis, suggesting that effective reform requires a combination of corporate accountability and coordinated public health policy.

Subsequent research has examined the logistics of overdose responses, noting that the vast majority of nonfatal overdose victims are transported to hospitals. Data indicates racial disparities in these responses, with Black and Hispanic patients being approximately 43% to 44% more likely to be transported to a hospital than White patients. Additionally, studies such as the REFOCUS project in Kentucky are investigating specific patterns of opioid misuse among African Americans to improve targeted substance use interventions.
