Opposition parties challenge KP emergency and governor’s rule in court
Political leaders and opposition alliances have filed constitutional petitions in the Peshawar High Court challenging the federal government's imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). The measures, which were proclaimed on October 11, led to the suspension of the province's elected government.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has requested the court to declare the proclamation unconstitutional and restore the provincial government. The petition argues that the emergency was issued without sufficient objective grounds and names the Federation of Pakistan, the KP government, and Governor Faisal Karim Kundi as respondents.
Simultaneously, the Tehreek Tahafuz-e-Aeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP), an alliance of six opposition parties, has also approached the court. The TTAP petition contends that imposing governor’s rule despite the existence of an elected provincial government violates multiple articles of the Constitution. Alliance leaders have condemned the removal of the provincial administration, describing the move as an unjustified action against elected representatives.
