Oral microbiome research advances cancer detection and bacterial control
Researchers are exploring new ways to utilize the oral microbiome for cancer detection and prevention. A study from Yonsei University suggests that saliva analysis could serve as an effective, non-invasive method for identifying risks of gastrointestinal cancers. By analyzing the oral-fecal index, researchers found that certain oral microbes colonize the digestive tract of patients with stomach and colorectal cancer at significantly higher rates than healthy individuals or those with metabolic diseases.
Complementing these diagnostic insights, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have developed a specialized chewing gum designed to target harmful bacteria without disrupting healthy oral flora. Formulated with lablab bean powder, the plant lectin FRIL, and the antimicrobial peptide protegrin-1, the gum reduced levels of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum by over 99 percent. These specific bacteria are linked to increased inflammation and poorer survival rates in head and neck cancers. Additionally, the gum demonstrated antiviral properties by binding to human papillomavirus (HPV) particles, potentially preventing them from entering cells.
