In a study led by Jihyun F. Kim and published in the journal Cell Host & Microbe, researchers analyzed 507 volunteers to identify distinct microbial signatures. The findings suggest that patterns in oral microbial communities differ based on health status, potentially allowing saliva-based screening to serve as a less invasive alternative to traditional stool samples for detecting gastrointestinal carcinomas. The research indicates that the MF index remains a consistent metric even when accounting for factors such as alcohol consumption, exercise, and body mass index.
