Orange Order members march in Portadown amid legal dispute
Thousands of Orange Order members marched through Portadown in County Armagh on Saturday. The procession, which included more than two dozen bands, was held ahead of an expected High Court ruling in Belfast regarding a legal challenge to a government ban on a previous parade.
The current dispute centers on the decision by Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Bryant to prevent a march from traveling down the Garvaghy Road, a mainly nationalist route, following warnings of potential disorder. This follows a recent instance where the Parades Commission authorized a silent march along the road for the first time in 28 years, which was subsequently blocked by local residents, leading to a two-week standoff.
Members of the Orange Order are contesting the Secretary of State's decision and a request from Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Chief Constable Jon Boutcher to reconsider the Parades Commission's approval. The Garvaghy Road has historically been a significant sectarian flashpoint, with the last successful march through the area occurring in 1997.
