Orange Order parade bid sparks warnings from residents' groups
Eleven nationalist residents' groups across Northern Ireland have issued a joint statement warning that the Orange Order's application to march down Garvaghy Road in Portadown could undermine existing parade accommodations in other areas. The groups, which include the Lower Ormeau Concerned Community and the Springfield Residents’ Action Group, stated they have spent decades working to ensure residents live free from sectarian intimidation through negotiated agreements.
The Orange Order is seeking permission to complete its traditional route through the Garvaghy Road this Sunday. The Parades Commission is currently reviewing the application, with a decision expected later this week. No such parade has successfully passed through the nationalist district since 1997, and past attempts were linked to significant violence and security operations during the Drumcree stand-offs of the 1990s.
In response to the concerns, DUP MP Carla Lockhart urged the Orange Order to engage directly with local districts rather than following what she described as a “failed residents group strategy.” She called on parties to “abandon the politics of threats.”
