Orangutan populations in Indonesia face mixed conservation outcomes

Conservation efforts in Indonesia are seeing success in the Jantho Pine Forest Nature Reserve. Since 2011, the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program has relocated nearly 200 rescued or relocated Sumatran orangutans to the reserve. This initiative has resulted in a growing wild population that is now reproducing naturally, with at least 10 births recorded.

However, other species face severe threats. The Tapanuli orangutan, identified as a distinct species from the Sumatran orangutan in 2017, remains critically endangered with an estimated population of approximately 716 individuals. Their habitat in the Batang Toru region of North Sumatra is fragmented by roads, agriculture, and mining. Recent extreme weather and landslides in November 2025 reportedly damaged over 8,000 hectares of habitat and may have caused the deaths of roughly 58 individuals, representing about 7 percent of the population.
