Orbital economy development faces rising space debris risks
The development of the orbital economy is shifting from purely publicly funded space exploration toward commercial industrialization. This transition is structured across five developmental stages: sovereign access, digital infrastructure, in-orbit industrial production, cislunar space, and deep space.
However, the growing density of objects in orbit presents significant risks. Space debris, including defunct satellites and rocket stages, increases the likelihood of high-speed collisions that can trigger cascading fragmentation effects. This growing problem is driving the emergence of new business models, with companies like Astroscale and ClearSpace focusing on active debris removal and satellite maintenance to prevent collisions.
Tim Flohrer of the European Space Agency warns that the amount of debris may continue to grow even without new launches, as fragmentation occurs faster than natural atmospheric reentry. The market's success depends on whether policymakers and operators establish binding regulations regarding responsibility and costs for orbital maintenance.
