Orca Stranded Near Victoria Freed by Rising Tide

A seven‑year‑old Bigg’s killer whale, identified as T65B2 “Corvus,” became high‑stranded on a Salish Sea beach between Smith and Minor islands in the Strait of Juan de Fuca on July 16, about 70 km southeast of Greater Victoria. The Pacific Whale Watch Association, in coordination with NOAA Fisheries West Coast and the Washington‑based SeaDoc Society, dispatched biologists and wildlife veterinarians to assess the animal. Team members reported the whale was in robust physical condition with normal vital signs. Choosing to let natural forces take over, they monitored the situation without direct intervention. Within 30 minutes the incoming tide lifted the whale free, allowing it to surface and swim away. Hours later Corvus rejoined its pod, the T65B family, in the surrounding waters. SeaDoc officials highlighted the episode as an example of effective cross‑border wildlife response and the importance of knowing when to step back and let nature act.
