Marine mammal rescue efforts near Vancouver Island

Overview

Recent marine wildlife incidents near Vancouver Island have involved both stranded and entangled whales. In July, a seven-year-old Bigg’s killer whale named Corvus became stranded on a beach in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Biologists and veterinarians monitored the animal, which was in robust physical condition, and allowed the incoming tide to lift the whale free. Corvus subsequently rejoined its pod.

In August, a humpback whale calf traveling with its mother, Tempest, was found entangled in fishing gear near the south coast of Vancouver Island. The calf was first spotted by a captain from Eagle Wing Tours, who noted that the vessel had removed derelict fishing gear from the water shortly before the sighting.

A multi-agency response involving Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Cetus Research & Conservation Society, and NOAA Fisheries West Coast worked to disentangle the calf. The operation, which continued late into the evening as the whales moved between Canadian and U.S. waters, was successful in removing the gear. Entanglement in fishing gear remains a significant global threat to humpback whales.
