East Evans Creek Fire expands to 7,800 acres in Oregon, prompting evacuations

The East Evans Creek Fire in Jackson County, Oregon, ignited on July 10 after a vehicle struck a power pole. By July 15 the blaze had grown to 7,843 acres and was only 5% contained. Firefighters deployed hand crews, engines, bulldozers and aircraft dropping water and retardant, while also conducting tactical firing operations to reduce fuels ahead of the fire.

Governor Tina Kotek invoked the Emergency Conflagration Act, allowing statewide resources to assist local crews. Evacuation orders were issued for multiple zones, with shelters opened at Hanby Middle School in Gold Hill for residents and pets, and additional facilities for horses and livestock. Road closures included East Evans Creek Road and portions of Antioch Road. Smoke from the fire reduced visibility and air quality in nearby valleys. Officials scheduled a community meeting on July 15 to update residents.

The incident highlights the risk of rapid wildfire spread in steep, dry terrain under hot, windy conditions, and the coordinated response between local, state and federal agencies to protect lives and property.
