Hagen and Paradise wildfires expand in Umatilla National

Overview

By early September, firefighting efforts in the Umatilla National Forest continued to show progress in containing the Hagen and Paradise fires, aided by recent rain and cooler temperatures.

The Hagen Fire grew to approximately 61,408 acres by September 4, with containment increasing from 33% in late August to 54%. Personnel assigned to the Hagen Fire fluctuated from 1,043 in late August to 879 by August 31, and 785 by September 4. Recent tactical operations included firing operations along southern edges to pull the fire toward control lines, as well as suppression repair and perimeter patrolling.

The Paradise Fire expanded to 9,634 acres by September 4, with containment rising from 13% in late August to 22%. Personnel numbers for the Paradise Fire were reported at 463 in late August, 506 on August 31, and 293 by September 4. Crews have focused on strengthening control lines, mopping up hotspots near the Mill Creek drainage and Forest Service Road 65, and conducting structure protection and scouting for containment opportunities.

Authorities have issued warnings for hunters and visitors to comply with forest closures and remain alert to personnel and equipment operating in the area. While weather conditions have improved, officials continue to prioritize suppression repair and securing fire edges in the Mill Creek watershed.
