Oregon and Washington towns face higher wildfire risk after socioeconomic study
Researchers from Oregon State University and The Nature Conservancy, funded by the U.S. Forest Service, analyzed wildfire risk in more than 1,000 Pacific Northwest communities. By applying a social‑vulnerability index that includes demographics, housing density and transportation, they found that 459 small towns—such as Cave Junction, Glendale, La Pine, Warm Springs (OR) and Goldendale (WA)—are at greater wildfire risk than previously estimated, while risk levels fell for 541 better‑resourced communities.
The study, published in *Environmental Research Letters*, warns that low‑income, highly vulnerable towns often lack the capacity to secure publicly funded mitigation, suggesting public dollars should be directed toward these areas. Co‑author Chris Dunn noted that these towns “have slightly lower wildfire exposure than some nearby, better‑resourced communities … but they experience greater social vulnerability and therefore are likely to experience greater impacts if a fire occurred.” The researchers cite climate‑change‑driven heat, drought and a potential early El Niño as factors extending the fire season.
The findings highlight the need for targeted home‑hardening, landscape management, smoke‑control plans and adequate fire‑fighter resources to protect the most vulnerable Pacific Northwest communities.
