Oregon Governor Declares State of Emergency Amid Severe Drought and Wildfire Risks

State climatologist Larry O’Neill warned that 2026 is on track to be Oregon’s worst drought in more than a decade, with snowpack measured at just 11 % of the historical average. The low snowpack, combined with a developing El Niño, signals drier and warmer winters ahead and tests the state’s water‑management preparedness.

In response, Governor Tina Kotek issued an emergency proclamation that authorises expanded firefighting crews, aerial support, ground resources and National Guard assistance through the end of the fire season. The declaration follows more than 400 wildfires that have burned over 8,000 acres this year, while 17 of the state’s 36 counties remain under drought alerts. Officials urged residents to sign up for Oregon’s statewide alert system, prepare evacuation plans and keep emergency kits ready.
