ORF faces pressure over financing and structural reforms

The Austrian public broadcaster ORF is facing significant pressure regarding its future structure, financing, and programming. At an upcoming media forum, interim Director General Ingrid Thurnher aims to discuss strengthening the broadcaster's technological and financial viability to adapt to the digital and AI era.

Financial reform is a central point of contention. ORF Foundation Council Chairman Heinz Lederer has rejected an increase in the ORF household levy, instead calling for structural changes to personnel and salary models, including a reduction in management positions. Simultaneously, the ÖVP party has proposed a more efficient, leaner structure with costs closer to private media companies, citing Scandinavian models as examples of successful public funding.

In the media landscape, the Association of Austrian Private Broadcasters (VÖP) is calling for increased media subsidies and more flexibility for private players to compete with global digital platforms.

On the programming front, recent viewership data shows high engagement for political interviews. FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl's appearance in the “Sommergespräche” series drew an average of 786,000 viewers, significantly outperforming other party leaders in market share.
