Organ donation awareness highlighted in Peru and Mexico
In Peru, a 50-year-old woman's organ donation has provided a second chance at life for six patients on waiting lists. The donation included a liver, kidneys, corneas, and skin. This operation was managed by the National Organ Procurement Coordination of the General Directorate of Donations, Transplants, and Blood Bank (DIGDOT). Health officials emphasized that family consent is vital and encouraged citizens to register their willingness to donate on their national ID cards to ensure their wishes are respected.
In Mexico, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) is promoting organ donation awareness ahead of the National Day of Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation on September 26. Through the ‘Código Vida’ strategy, IMSS identifies potential donors who have suffered catastrophic injuries. Medical professionals stress the importance of informing family members of one's intent to donate, as the decision ultimately rests with the relatives during moments of grief.
