Organ donation awareness in Latin America

Overview

Public health and religious organizations in Peru, Mexico, and Paraguay continue efforts to increase awareness regarding organ and tissue donation.

In Paraguay, the Archdiocese of Asunción marked National Organ and Tissue Donor Day on September 12 with an appeal for voluntary donation. Cardinal Adalberto Martínez Flores encouraged citizens to view donation as an ‘act of solidarity and love,’ referencing the legacy of Ana Laura Almirón Riquelme. Her 2013 death while awaiting a heart transplant led to the enactment of ‘Ley Anita’ (Law No. 6170/2018), which improved national awareness of transplant waiting lists managed by the National Institute of Ablation and Transplantation (INAT).

Recent medical cases in Peru and Mexico have highlighted the impact of donations. In Peru, a kidney transplant at Hospital Edgardo Rebagliati Martins allowed Alexandra Montoya to recover from irreversible kidney damage caused by lupus after receiving a kidney from Diego García. In Mexico, a 37-year-old woman named Joanna received a kidney transplant at the IMSS Hospital de Especialidades No. 71 following six years of terminal renal failure. The organ was provided by Benjamín, a donor who had expressed his intent to donate prior to his death in an accident.

In Mexico, regional authorities are intensifying promotion through community engagement and infrastructure. In Xalapa, Veracruz, over 2,100 young people participated in a ‘Social Run’ organized by the municipal Youth Directorate and the Veracruz State Transplant Center. However, Salvador Aburto Morales, head of the Veracruz State Transplant Center, noted that only about 10% of potential donors in the state agree to donate, placing Veracruz among the lowest rankings nationally. In the State of Mexico, officials reported 929 organ and tissue donations during the three-year administration of Governor Delfina Gómez Álvarez, supported by 71 authorized establishments and an aerial rescue strategy to manage organ transfers.
